Full moon days are considered as National Holidays in Sri Lanka. Every full moon (usually one a month) is a public holiday in the Country. Each of the full moons have its own name and they are days to commemorate key events in Buddhism. These full moon days are known as Poya in Sinhala language .
It is a day which each and every fellow Lankan look forward to every month irrespective of religion. Apart from Saturday and Sunday. This day is usually spent lazily at home by most of the stressed out fellow citizens.Especially if it falls on an in between day of the week,Reason being , Generally shops and businesses are closed on Poya days, and above all the sale of alcohol and meat is too forbidden.
But in most cases we often look forward for it to fall on the day immediately before or after the weekend. In order to plan up and enjoy fun filled ,long ,weekend-out trips.
Being the fifteenth day of the Lunar calendar This day was declared as a day of worship for all Buddhists ages ago but nowadays it has become a day of de-stressing to all Lankans more than its religious significants .
For most of us the thought of next day being a Poya often brings immense joy to each of our hearts from school children to working adults. And most of all to the tired housewives to whom an extra hour of snooze is definitely a treat.
Having had the Poya day for this month yesterday the 17th. We await with much anticipation for the next which would fall on Friday the 16th of September, therefore giving us a three day long weekend to look forward to…
